Associate Professor Will Loh is the Head of the Division of Critical Care and a Senior Consultant in the Department of Anaesthesia at the National University Hospital (NUH). He also serves as the Research Director for the Department of Anaesthesia and holds the position of Associate Chairman of the Medical Board, overseeing Clinical Risk Management.
Prof Loh graduated from University College London Medical School and completed his internal medicine, anaesthesia, and intensive care training in Liverpool, UK. He is dually accredited in Intensive Care Medicine and Anaesthesia, holding Fellowships from the Royal College of Anaesthetists (FRCA) and the Faculty of Intensive Care Medicine (FFICM), as well as the European Diploma in Intensive Care (EDIC). Before returning to Singapore in 2014, he was a Consultant and Chairman of the Intensive Care Unit at The Walton Centre for Neurology and Neurosurgery, one of the largest neuroscience hospitals in the UK.
A keen researcher since medical school, Prof Loh’s work focuses on translational medicine and improving patient outcomes following major surgery and critical illness. His primary research areas include modulating inflammation, the diagnosis of severe sepsis, and the effects of anaesthesia on ageing and neurocognitive function (postoperative delirium). He has been awarded over half a million dollars recently in competitive grants, including for the DISSIPATE study (examining the inflammatory effects of head injuries) and the FICE study (sarcopenia in critical illness).
In addition to his clinical and research roles, Prof Loh is active in medical education and ethics. He is an examiner for the Masters of Medicine (Intensive Care Medicine and Anaesthesiology) at NUS and teaches on informed consent for healthcare practitioners. He also advises on medicolegal aspects of healthcare and is a certified mediator with the Singapore International Mediation Institute (SIMI) and a member of the clinical ethics committee of NUH.
