Santubong Wildlife Mangrove Cruise
The wildlife cruise experience of Sarawak takes place mainly in the vicinity of Kuching Wetlands National Park. Across the bay of the park is the historical Santubong Peninsular and it is at the estuary of the river where the dolphin watch happens. The national Park is a RAMSAR site (wetlands of international importance), one of the seven in Malaysia.
Bako National Park
The star of Bako National Park is undoubtedly the proboscis monkey, the big nosed, pot-bellied comedian of the rainforest. But the star has a supporting cast of long-tailed macaque monkeys, usually patrolling the park headquarters, silvered leaf monkeys, monitor lizards and squirrels and flying lemurs that glide from tree to tree.
Jong Crocodile Farm
The largest crocodile farm in Malaysia and one of the largest in Southeast Asia. Its main purpose is to conserve and breed crocodiles while also educating visitors about these fascinating reptiles. Expect to see various species of crocodiles, including the fierce saltwater crocodile (Crocodylus porosus) and the smaller but equally impressive African dwarf crocodile (Osteolaemus tetraspis). The farm provides a safe and controlled environment for the crocodiles, allowing visitors to observe them up close. There are feeding sessions where visitors can witness the powerful jaws and feeding behaviors of these creatures. Other exhibits featuring snakes, lizards, and tortoises, providing visitors with an opportunity to learn about different reptilian species. Additionally, the farm often organizes shows and demonstrations where skilled handlers showcase their expertise in handling and interacting with crocodiles.
Semenggoh Wildlife Centre
The Semenggoh Wildlife Centre of Semenggoh Nature Reserve is by far the biggest Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre in Sarawak. Back in 1975, it was established as a sanctuary for Orangutans who are injured, orphaned or being kept captive as illegal pets. This wildlife centre has a thriving population of healthy adolescents and young adult semi-wild Orangutans. They spend most of their time roaming the forest but are trained to get back to the centre during feeding times where they will be able to get a free meal from the caretakers.
