Dr Lara Prisco is a Consultant Neuroanaesthetist and Neurointensivist at Oxford University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust and Senior Clinical Research Fellow at the Nuffield Department of Clinical Neurosciences, University of Oxford. Her clinical and academic work focuses on neurocritical care, traumatic brain injury, disorders of consciousness, delirium, and critical care electroencephalography (EEG), with a particular interest in translational approaches to brain monitoring and recovery after acute neurological injury.
Dr Prisco graduated in Medicine from the University of Trieste, Italy, where she also completed specialist training in Anaesthetics, Intensive Care, and Hyperbaric Medicine. She subsequently undertook advanced fellowships in Neuroanaesthesia and Neurocritical Care at the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery, London and Addenbrooke’s Hospital, Cambridge. Earlier research training included work with the Coma Science Group in Liège, Belgium, investigating neurophysiological biomarkers of recovery following brain injury. She also holds postgraduate qualifications in Paediatric Intensive Care Medicine, Clinical Trials, and Public Health.
Since joining Oxford in 2016, Dr Prisco has led and contributed to several national and international research initiatives in neurocritical care and acute brain dysfunction. She currently holds an NIHR Doctoral Research Fellowship investigating electrophysiological signatures of neurological recovery and delirium after traumatic brain injury. Her work integrates EEG, neuroimaging, biomarkers, and digital health methodologies to improve phenotyping and prognostication in critically ill patients. She is also Oxford PI for the TBI-REPORTER Experimental Medicine Network.
Alongside her research activities, Dr Prisco has held several national and international leadership roles, including elected UK National Representative to the European Society of Intensive Care Medicine (ESICM) and Council Member of the NeuroAnaesthesia and Critical Care Society (NACCS). Her academic interests also extend to education, digital health communication, and the development of multidisciplinary brain health pathways across perioperative and critical care medicine.
